INTRODUCTION

            Founded in 2008, the Department of Agricultural Economics and Policies is a unit under the Faculty of Economics and Rural Development, Vietnam National University of Agriculture, formerly known as Department of Agricultural Economics, established in 1961. Up to now, the department has 12 faculty members with specialties in training and research in economics, social sciences and management. Most of the faculty have graduated with foreign doctorate and master's degrees. The staff of the Department includes: 1 Professor - Doctor, 2 Associate Professors - Doctors, 5 Doctors, 3 PhD Students and 1 Masters.

The main tasks of the Department are teaching and doing researches in Agricultural Economics, Agricultural policies, Public policies, Rural Development, and Agricultural Extension at different levels. Most of the research subjects are involved in teaching programs in Agricultural Economics, Development Economics, Economics and Labor Organization, Economic Management, Rural Development for undergraduate and graduate degrees.

With an experienced team, the Department regularly provides short-term training courses on capacity building for government and non-governmental officials who have been working in the field of agriculture, rural development, and public policies, especially in the field of agricultural economics, policy making and analysis.

Besides, the Department also provides consultant services on agricultural and rural development, on policy making and analysis to meet the needs of national and international government and non-government organizations.

            With the aim of developing and improving the quality of teaching and researching activities, the Department has cooperated with many domestic and foreign organizations in expert exchange the fields of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development. Domestic cooperating organizations are Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the Center for Family and Gender Studies, Ministry of Science and Technology, and many provincial line departments in whole country. International organizations with which the Department has been cooperating are International Rice Institute (IRRI), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP),  the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Chiang Mai University, University of Philippines Losbanos, Kyushu University, Khon Kaen University, Massey University, University of Tokyo, and others.

With the efforts and success achieved, the Department has been honored for many years with the title of “Excellent team” awarded by the President of the Vietnam National University of Agriculture.
